Newcastle Herald Homes of the Hunter Feature – Waratah Renovation/Extension

Our Waratah project was recently showcased in Newcastle Herald’s Homes of the Hunter feature.

We completed a full renovation/extension to the old miners cottage for our clients creating a seamless connection between the old and new spaces. Under the new design by Brik Design Studio, the small, barely functional 2 bedroom, one bathroom house was transformed into a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath home with a large contemporary extension off the back of the cottage consisting of an open-plan kitchen and living and dining area opening onto an alfresco area. An internal laundry was also created in addition to the front entry and deck with the introduction of more storage and a flood of natural light throughout the previously dark cottage.

Light plays an important role in the design with high ceilings and Velux skylights in the kitchen and bathroom elevating the sense of spaciousness and brightness throughout. This is complemented by the crisp white palette with beautiful concrete-look floor tiles and classic timber boards to create an energised feel. A new Colorbond roof, steel frames, Ceasarstone and Earp Tile splashback all encompass contemporary sleekness while also paying homage to the heritage of the cottage. Half vertical paneling was also a special feature of the original cottage that was continued into the new bedroom.

We were very aware that the client’s wanted to be respectful of the existing cottage and as their first home purchased to begin a family in, we felt very privileged to be able to deliver their vision. The result is a light, stylish and most importantly functional family home that was built with respect and mindfulness of the cottage’s original story- which the clients absolutely love.
